UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I was wondering if I could get some help with two of my Unix computers.

Bare with me as I am new to this software and, hardly know anything on these computers, except based on what I have already worked with them.

Here is my issue.

I have two unix computers setup together, not connected to any PC servers. I have a port connecting the two computers with cat 5 cable.

I can connect to computer say # 2 via XFTP and can transfer files with a PC, using a FTP tool.

How-ever on computer #1 I do the same steps and it will not connect. I try to XFTP the computers together and it tells me that it lost connection to the other computer.

I can ping both computers from my pc, and can ping both each other and itself at both computers with 0 pack loss. How-ever I cannont get they to communicate to share files.

I would like to be able to provide some system info, how-ever I am new at this, and it's isnt what I am used to with Windows or Macs. When I do logon to the computer it says Alpha Generation, so i dont' know if that helps or not as well. And I seen V 5.1 B if that helps

Any help would be appreciated.

What I dont get is how you can transfer to PC, since both servers (are they so?) are ony linked to themselves...
Alpha? Youve got some DEC box?

I can transfer from Pc to computer # 2 through FTP how-ever I cannont connect to computer number #1 or connect computer # 1 and #2 together. They are only linked to themselfs through a hub


I added since them that I think i have version 5.1 B Any help?

Ok, lets forget connections, for now then...
1)You can from a PC, ping both unix box
2) You can ping from box 1 box2 and PC (with what account?)
3) You can ping from box2 box1 and PC (with what account?)
Is that correct?

I can

Ping computer 1 from Pc
Ping PC from computer 1

I can ping them using the cmd on the pc and ping it using the xterm on the unix.


I have checked every setting inside the sysman and they computers are identical as far as settings.

I can also ping the computer number # 2 from Pc how-ever I get a packet loss of 50% most of the time.
