I don't think the other two are needed either - the S86nps is for Novell networking, and the S99ssinit has something to do with "Equinox" which might have been an older fax system? Anyway, I have a network printer that works with the physical system, set as the default printer, and I know that I will need to set it up in the VM - I'll be trying that soon. But what I want to do is to print a list of files that are in the /etc directory, does anyone know why this would not work?
When I try that from within the /etc directory nothing prints at all. Maybe that is not the right command? Any help is appreciated, as always.
OK, the command did not recognize "lp0" so I did an "lpstat -t" which showed the name of my default printer as "hp4200n". I ran the command this way:
and the listing tried to print. It spit out 7 pages from the printer with only the first page having any ink on it. I am attaching a PDF of how this printed, and it's really strange - only the first few file names printed and it looks really weird. Is there a way to fix this so I can print the whole list? Thanks again.
the print file does not have carriage returns.
there are several solutions.
1. on the front panel of the printer, change the setting so that the printer adds a carriage return every time it finds a line feed.
2. add <esc>&k2G to the beginning of the print file, or to the model file.
3. use
Thank you for that help - I found the setting in the printer and now I have the listing printed out. I'm going to compare to the VM and see if I can get anywhere. I really appreciate all the help from everyone! Thanks!

Now I have another thought that may be the final step I need. I remembered there was a floppy disk that was called "Menu Control" for the legacy software that we run in the unix box, and it had to be installed for the system to work properly. I actually still have the floppy disk, and I'm trying to mount it in the physical system to see what is on it and if I can copy it over to the VM and run it. There seems to be something wrong with my physical system and the floppy drive, because I cannot get it to work. Here is what I have tried:
Code:
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt
and
Code:
mount /dev/fd0135ds18 /mnt
The error to both of those commands is "cannot stat (dev)". So then I tried this:
Code:
dtype /dev/fd0135ds18
and the error there is "I/O error". I have tried two different floppy drives, ran a cleaning disk on both, and still the same results. Is there any way to get the floppy drive working so I can see/transfer the files? Thanks
P.S. the floppy drive light comes on each time, just no good results.

Sorry for the multiple posts, but with each step of progress I make a new challenge arises. I seem to recall this being a hallmark of unix. Anyway, I now believe that I have the floppy mounted in the physical machine and when I do an "ls" there is just one file called "install".
When I tried to copy this file to a /tmp directory it said I needed to specify either -r or -R to "copy directory install" This poses two questions in my mind:
1. If I copy it, which switch should I use, -r or -R?
2. If I copy it, and then ftp over to the VM, will there be a way for me to run the "install"?
Any help on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
cd /mnt
cd install
ls -l
*** is the output just files, or are there more directories?
cd /mnt
cp -omr * /tmp
cd /tmp
ls -ltr
*** you should find a directory 'install'
cd install
hopefully there is a readme or a setup or install script to read/run.
Code:
cd /tmp
tar ctvf menu.tar install
ftp menu.tar to the vm
on the vm
tar xvf menu.tar
run the install
Inside the "install" directory on the floppy is a list of files shown on the attached screenshot. I would guess the INSTALL file is the "setup" but I'll need to know how to run that when I get it copied over. So it looks like I need to cp the files from the floppy to the /tmp and then create the "tar" file to ftp to VM? Do I have that right?
