Hi
I'm installing the gettext package (ie which updates the msgfmt compiler with the --strict option) for compiling po files, on a Solaris 2.8 machine. I am installing it using the command:
pkgadd -d gettext-0.10.37-sol8-sparc-local

with gettext-0.10.37-sol8-sparc-local being the installation file.

Whilst I am getting instructions that the installation was successful, e.g.

Contrary to the output, the new gettext (ie msgfmt --strict) does not appear to be installed.

Any ideas??

It looks like you have a read-only /usr filesystem - that means you cannot add the package there - try changing either where you are putting the package (maybe /opt?) or you would have to change the mount for /usr (in /etc/vfstab) to allow adding the package (and then reset it - both require a reboot)

Thanks, but i tried installing the package in other locations such as the /opt dir, but to no avail. When I request the current list of mounted devices (ie host% mount), /usr/local reads appears with a read/write properties, e.g.

/usr/local on sunserv:/usr/local remote/read/write/setuid/dev=3400004 on Mon Jun 24 17:21:59 2002

Also, I tried alter the read-only properites in the /etc/vfsatb file by changing the "mount options" to from "-" to "yes", e.g.
Original settings:
sunserv:/usr/local - /usr/local nfs - yes -
to
sunserv:/usr/local - /usr/local nfs - yes yes

Maybe this is not the correct attrubute to change in the vfstab??

I would not change the /etc/vfstab for that mount point.

Since you have a nfs drive mounted for /usr/local, you would probably need to go to your server 'sunserv' to add the package. I don't believe you can load a package on a nfs mount (even if it does say read-write). Unless you can get the package onto a local drive (non-nfs) you may be out of luck.
