How to view binary files in ASCII format.????????????????

Depending on which Unix you are using, you can use something like "od" that will perform an octal dump, or "xd" ("xxd" on some linux systems) to perform a hex-dump.
If you just want to find text strings in a binary file, use the "strings" command.

If you can provide more info, someone may be able to better help find what meets your needs.

I generate a hardcopy (C-a h) of an ncurses screen which has some formatting on it (boxes, highlights). If I "cat" the file, i get only text. Convert ASCII to BINARY

Here is what I did . . . . I FTP'd several *.pdf files from a web site to a UNIX server, and did not set the transfer mode to BIN, now Adobe thinks that the documents are corrupted.
