You need ksh to run this script or try:
Code:
#! /bin/sh
while read line; do
last=`basename "$line"`
echo $last
done < test.txt

Quote:

remove $ from line, it should look like this:
Code:
while read line; do

That works..

I have a file:
gk@dev1:~> cat more.txt
iam :here home/usr/bin
iam :here home/usr
iam :here help/home/bin
iam :here home/bin/var

i want to cut the some of the letters from the above file and print only the last letters like
my data would be
bin
usr
bin
var

How do i do that?

To shereenmotor

Quote:
str=/x/c/gh/jk/bean.jsp
echo ${m##/*/}

This won't work, try:
Code:
str=/x/c/gh/jk/bean.jsp
echo ${str##*/}

Did you try that buddy?
this will also work
echo ${str##/*/}
