Accident use of arp -d command:Not able to login to server

Hi ,
I am working in a Unix Solaris server which has apache installed. I was logged into the server using ssh . I accidentally ran the arp -d command with the hostname of the logged in server and deleted the entry Smilie.
Now I am not able to access the server. Is there anyway I can access the server and make the entry again or will it get created automatically ?

Any suggestions that will help me logging into the server will be Great

ARP ought to regenerate its own entries, and I'm not sure why it's not. If you use DHCP, try renewing your IP address, which might generate enough ARP traffic to let it know you exist again. Also try logging in from a different server.

You may also be able to login to the console - the terminal that is physically connected to the sun box.

Dear Corona688,

'ARP ought to regenerate its own entries, and I'm not sure why it's not. '

Does the above statement means, it wll generate its owen entry and we should be able to login again.

'Also try logging in from a different server ' I did not understand this. After deleting the ARP entry for the servers HOSTNAME I am not able to login to the server from any servers. How can I login to this server

Logging into the console means, logging into the terminal which is directly connected to the sun box ? and after that is it possible for me to create the ARP entry ?

And by anychance restarting the server will create the ARP entry again?

Imho. The command "arp -d" did not cause this problem. The ARP table is only a cache.

Were you logged in at the time and suddenly got disconnected? What did you actually type in the minutes preceding the event?

I just deleted my own ARP entry. Nothing happened. It didn't even break my SSH connection. When something doesn't know your ARP address, all it has to do is ask. It will automatically do so then carry on without missing a beat.

I'm with methyl on this. Unless you had something funky set up like static ARP addresses that cross subnets, deleting an ARP address shouldn't have done anything.

statically set ARP addresses won't autodetect, but I've only seem them used once in my entire life, at all, ever.

I couldn't say until I know what actually happened here.

Thanks a lot methyl, corona688 fro your replies.

I was logged into the Server <HOSTNAMEA>

I was checking netstat -a and arp -an outputs

Actually without knowing the correct use of arp -d <hostname> , i thought it is for giving details , I executed arp -d <HOSTNAMEA>

Minutes after that my ssh session got terminated.

I really do not know whether deleting the ARP entry was the reason. I could not telnet or ping or ssh the server thereafter.

The only action I did was deleting that entry.
