Displayin error in executing the script

Code:
echo "enter your number"
read x
while [ "$x" -le 10]
do
  x = `expr $x \* 2`
  echo $x
done

I am giving i/p for x as 2 mt

But it throws syntax error on 'expr' st

I am expecting an output

Code:
2
4
6
8

What works (even though your math fails me, sorry ...):

Code:
#!/bin/bash

echo -n "Number: " ; read X
while [ $X -le 10 ]
do
  X=$( expr $X \* 2 )
  # X=$(( $X * 2 ))
  echo "$X"
done

exit 0
# finis

...and it should work with straight numbers.

It's working for me ... only problem was of space/blanks.
# vi 1.sh
# chmod +x 1.sh
# cat 1.sh
echo "enter your number"
read x
while [ "$x" -le 10 ]
do
x=`expr $x \* 2`
echo $x
done

# ./1.sh
enter your number
2
4
8
16

Hope this helps.
