Error Monitor Problems

I got an ASUS VW224/VW224 monitor for my birthday. Problem is, when I hook it up to my computer, the image will appear for 5-10 seconds then flash to a blank screen then show an image again. It is really annoying. I called ASUS tech support and they blamed it on my video card (typical). The funny part is that my computer has an ASUS motherboard integrated with an ATi graphics card. Since tech support was no help (as usual), I decided to come here. Is there a driver or something I can install to get it to stop doing this? It's really annoying.
Here are some stats in case they're needed:

Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope
Graphics card: ATI RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series] ; 64 bits
