cannot print the value

Dear Experts,
I m using solaris 10 operating system. I have stored 08 in a variable called firstnum.

I have done like this.

bash $ firstnum=08
bash $ printf "%d" $firstnum

It is throwing an error below

-bash: printf: 08: invalid number.

bash $ firstnum=09
bash $ printf "%d" $firstnum

-bash: printf: 09: invalid number.

But intersting fact is that upto 07 it is printing its value and when I store 010 and 011 in same variable is printing the values 8 and 9.

Regards

That's because it presumes a number prefixed with a 0 is octal, so 01-07 are valid octal numbers, but 08 is not. I'm not sure if you can turn this off... you may have to strip off the 0 manually.

Try this:

Code:
printf "%d\n" ${firstnum#0*}

PLease one more

Dear Expert,
the above syntax really worked out. Thanks for that. But when i implement the same code in shell script. It is throwing the following Error.

sub.sh: bad substitution

The Following is the script

sub.sh:

Month=`date +%m`
echo $Month
printf "%d\n" ${Month#0*}

/bin/sh doesn't recognize the syntax. At the top of the script, have

#!/bin/ksh

or

#!/bin/bash

or something like that.

On the second line of your script add:

set -x

Then post the output.
