Oracle Solaris10 Patching to Update 6

Hi all,
Beginner in Solaris 10 administration, I need to upgrade a Solaris 10 OS (SPARC) to update 6. I need to do this to install Oracle 11gR2.

Im currently here:
Solaris 10 1/06 s10s_u1wos_19a SPARC (update1)
kernel - 118822-25

I have severe space constraints in this server (around 3GB in /var though), so guess live update may not be an option. Can anyone suggest the process to update.

Read a post in this forum where it was said that "Patching" is not same as "Updating".

Note: I do not want to be at any level > update 6 as it could impact the deliveries made from this server.

No, patching is not exactly the same as updating. Patches are applied on an "as needed" basis, that is, it updates software that is already installed on the system. Updating installs (updates) to a new version.

In your situation what I would try is to get the installation media for 10u6. Boot from this media:

Code:
boot cdrom

to enter the install routine and see if it notices the existing Solaris installation (it should do), and offers you to update it. Be careful NOT to let it go into a new install if that doesn't happen; just interrupt it if it doesn't offer to update.

Ensure that you take a full backup before you start (especially since you are short on disk storage which means it could go bang!).

Hi Hicks, I was searching oracle for Solaris 10 (Update6) iso image. Unable to find any. Has Oracle stopped providing this through support portal?

If you can't find it then it's probably not out there unfortunately, although there's enough experienced members on this forum that someone might know where you can get it from.

This is the SPARC version you're talking about?

If you're completely stuck I'll sort something out for you.

Thanks Hicks,
Ya Im looking for SPARC 64bit.
I have the solaris 10 u6 Patchset, but that, as you have rightly mentioned earlier, will not make it truley Update 6.

I just have a single solaris box, so not very keen on cd update.
Have a few queries on solaris OS live upgrade.
1) Is it required to have new boot partion to be of the same size as / ?
My / is 10Gig, I have a slice of 15Gig which im thinking of setting up as new boot partition.

2) After live upgrade, will I be able to retrive/use any of the boot partitions?

3) What are the lupatches that should be installed over current version, so that live update is possible?
(Current OS - Solaris 10 1/06 s10s_u1wos_19a SPARC (update1), kernel - 118822-25)

@DukeNuke:

The link takes you to a page from where Solaris 10 (Update10&11) can be downloaded.
No sign of update6. Probably installation media has to be ordered?

You should just read what is written on the page...
