Hi

I'm trying to understand why swap -s and swap -l shows differrent output values for free and available ?

thx for help.

swap -l only shows swap space for physical devices (what Solaris calls "swap areas"). An example of a swap area might be /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/swap. It does not include swap space that is in the form of physical memory.

swap -s, on the other hand, prints summary information about the total swap space. These numbers include swap areas as well as swap space that is in the form of physical memory.

Additional
swap -l only list swap areas on disk in as partiton(s)
swap -s memory usage space for swap space ( will be neccessary when ram is not enough about to reserve for the swap usage )

an example
Code:
-bash-3.00# swap -l
swapfile dev swaplo blocks free
/dev/dsk/c0d0s1 102,1 8 1220928 1220928

Code:
-bash-3.00# swap -s
total: 142920k bytes allocated + 24500k reserved = 167420k used, 1144736k available

in swap -l
My swap disk is /dev/dsk/c0d0s1 and
1220928*512/1024=610464 KB in avaliable for swap disk

in swap -s
167420 KB for allocated and plus reserved (for future use)
167420 KB + Anony Mem + 610464 = amount total swap space
