/tmp on solaris zones

why does /tmp on a solaris zone eats up system's memory. And how can we avoid it. If i create a 5Gb file in /tmp of non global zone the system's free memory decreases by 5Gb and if delete that file it frees up the same amount of memory in top output.

Thats because /tmp is per default of type tmpfs (sort of ramdisk). The reason for that is to speed up tempfile operations. You can change the entry in /etc/vfstab to whatever diskdevice you want.

This is true for global zones as well as non-global zones.

I would suggest to keep /tmp configured to use virtual memory with tmpfs as it generally improves application performance. If you need to store 5GB files in a temporary location, use /var/tmp instead. It is backed by a file system on disk, not VM.
