for loop using the value '01' in PERL

Hi, I am trying to increment a value of 01 to 02 and the interpreter is reading it as 1 and incrementing to 2. Is there a way to keep the 0 at the beginning?

Can you be a bit more specific, like why you need it to say "02" - is it for printing out only? I've got a few ideas, but it does depend on what you need it for.

It's for counting from 01 to 12 and using that value in a search pattern. Essentially I'm looking to parse a text file to create a report based on each month out of the year...

That means it is for print-out only.

Try this:

PHP Code:
for($i=1$i<=12$i++) {

$_ sprintf("%02d"$i);
    print
"This is line '$_'.\n";

It's not for printing, its for use in a search pattern...I'm not sure I understand what your script does. Could you briefly explain?
Thanks.

You may embed a variable in the search pattern, with qr// instead of m//.

Perhaps this example would better show what I mean:

PHP Code:
for($i=1$i<=12$i++) {

$_ sprintf("%02d"$i);
    if (
"01 03 04 10 11 12" =~ qr/$_/) {
        print
"'$_' found!\n";
    } else {
        print
"'$_' not found!\n";
    }

which finds 01, 02, 03, ... , 11, 12 in the string and returns which one is and is not found. sprintf() in this example converts $i into the string form and assign to $_.

Hope this helps.

...you could also append the 0 if(strlen($string) != 2){$string = 0.$string} or something to that effect....
