tr command

I'm using tr command in my shell script to convert uppercase to lowercase

the script i'm using is

echo "string" | tr [A-Z] [a-z]

suddenly it stopped working. Any known reasons for this behaviour

The syntax is wrong. Here are two versions
Code:
echo "string" | tr -s '[:lower:]' '[:upper:]'
echo "string" | tr -s '[a-z]' '[A-Z]'

the syntax was working for me from long time and suddenly stopped working. I'm investigating on what changes effected tr command suddenly

Code:
Try:
type tr
(Make sure that it is the right tr).

alias
(Look for aliases of tr).

And an obscure one ... but quite likely to be your problem:
tr is affected by single character filenames in the directory if you use the (wrong) syntax you quote.

This sequence of commands in ksh prompt illustrates the problem:

1) Just show that I have no single character filenames.

ls ?
? not found

2) Create the first file called "a". tr misbehaves !

>a
echo "abcdef"|tr [a-z] [A-Z]
Abcdef

3) Create a second file called "c". tr fails !

>c
echo "abcdef"|tr [a-z] [A-Z]
tr: The combination of options and String parameters is not legal.
Usage: tr [ -c | -cds | -cs | -ds | -s ] [-A] String1 String2
       tr [ -cd | -cs | -d | -s ] [-A] String1

4) But it works if we use the correct syntax.

echo "abcdef"|tr '[a-z]' '[A-Z]'
ABCDEF

Bug

Hi,

I followed the steps you have given to me and it is happening because of the single character files

i have two single character files in one directory and it is not working there. But it is working in all other directories.

Thanks alot for taking your time and explaining me all these things. Youare really great.

Have a great Christmas

why the syntax is failing when there are two single character files. I tried the command with two single character files one in uppercase and 1 in lower case, then the command didn't fail but the result is not proper.

Do you have any idea of why tr is affected by single character files?????

Hi.

Note that Jim's solution used single quotes around the tr arguments. That protects against evaluation by the shell. To see what the shell actually did in your case, you can enter:
Code:
touch a
echo echo "abcdef"|tr [a-z] [A-Z]

which will print (but will not execute the command), and then again with the single quotes ... cheers, drl
