awk help

$ cat file1
A~1982~Y
X~1983~N
Z~1974~N

$ cat file2
S1~0
S2~1
S4~4

I have to replace the 2nd column of file1 with 2nd column of file2.

This is what I tried:

$ paste -d "~" file1 file2 | awk 'BEGIN{FS=OFS="~"}{$2=$4="";gsub(FS"+",FS)} {print $1,$3,$2}'

A~0~Y
X~1~N
Z~4~N

Just wondering how can I do this using NR==FNR , i.e. replace column p of file 1 with column q of file2, please help.

not sure what you are trying to do. but why dont you just print the the fields in the oder you want it. something like this.

paste -d "~" test test2 |awk 'BEGIN{FS="~"} {print $1"~"$5"~"$3 }'

Can anyone help me for a generic solution here. i.e. replace column p of file1 with column q of file2

You may try something like this:
(use nawk or /usr/xpg4/bin/awk on Solaris)

Code:
awk -F~ 'NR == FNR {
  _[FNR] = $q
  next
  }
$p = _[FNR] x
' OFS=~ q=2 p=2 file2 file1

Notice the input files order!
