Hi.....
i'm new to shell .
i want to write a script from where i need to search a particular string in another file(with .cam extension) & then replace some words(say ip address) to this.
e.g.
if i've in my another file which i want to search:

BEGIN
IPaddress
MACAddress


End

my script should search this file for the string IPaddress and then write the IP address that i've stored in a variable taking user input. & if IPaddress string do not have space in front of it,can it take care of the fact that it do not overwrite the next string(i.e. MAC address in this case) & just place the value of IP address between the strings IPaddress and MACaddress.
can anyone help me out in this?

its working.
can u suggest me the logic of this?
as i've a big program to do which have many such replacements.

and also,in some situations, i need to search some string in another file and then replace it with the user input.
say i've a cam file:

BEGIN
IPaddress
Nhid putNhid_here
macaddress
MTUsize
END

now from my shell script ,i've to search for the value in front of Nhid i.e. 'putNhid_here' and then replace this value with the user input value. and this user input may be of less or more characters.
can i get some help in this regard?

The logic is:

- define some variables which' names are self explaining
- ask user for input
- make a backup of your original file
- take the input and append it ( that \a in the sed statement ) where the pattern is and write it to a temp file
- mv the temp file over the original
