You should change the script I posted if you want to use it with the bourne shell:

#! /bin/sh

printf 'enter name: '
while IFS= :; do
  read name
  case $name in
    \ *) printf 'invalid, retry: ';;
      *) printf 'ok\n';break;;
  esac
done

You can put all your logic in the case statement.

Because I'm lazy I tried doing the 'character in front and then get the second character' solution, but it didn't make a difference, lol.

I'm now trying some of the other suggestions, I'll report back shortly.
You still have to double-quote the back-tic expansion.

Hi guys,

It took me a little while to make sure I understood it, but I wound up using Radoulov's solution, modified for my purpose. It's now working fine, thanks for all your help!
