String Compariosn: Use of If and OR

How to use OR with If for string comparison??

What is wrong in these two codes??

1.
if test $1 != "SO" OR $1 != "NO"
then
echo "Invalid"
else
echo "Valid"

2.
if(( $1 != "SO" || $1 != "NO" ))
then
echo "Invalid"
else
echo "Valid"

Please help?

Code:
if [[ "$1" != "SO" || "$1" != "NO" ]] ; then
    echo "invalid"
else
    echo "valid"
fi

If you want to compare the entered value to "NO" and "SO", logic as per me should be:

if [ "$1" != "SO" ] && [ "$1" != "NO" ]; then
echo "INVALID"
else
echo "VALID"
fi
# using || in place of && would always display "INVALID".

You may also use
case "$1" in
"SO" | "NO") echo "VALID";;
*)
echo "INVALID";;
