/dir/dir/dir/dir/filename

why not just

echo '/dir/dir/dir/dir/filename' | awk '{FS="/"}{print $6}'

That would only work if the file name is 5 directories deep. You could use echo '/dir/dir/dir/dir/filename' | awk 'BEGIN {FS="/"} {print $NF}' though. That would always print the last field (in this case, the file name).

hel needed

Hey I'm trying to find a file in a directory in the following way..

final_file=`find . -name \*$file_name.* | xargs ls -lt | nawk '/$month $dd/ { print $NF }' | cut -f2 -d "/"`

find . -name \*$file_name.* | xargs ls -lt | nawk '/$month $dd/ { print $NF }' gives filename as /filename so i'm using the cut at the last..

I have a problem using this in a shell script in KSH. I think $NF is being considered as a variable.. and the command is not finding the file i needed...

any suggestions how can i overcome this ??

you can also SED to do this

echo "/dir/dir/dir/dir/filename" | sed "s/.*\/\(.*\)/\1/"

why not dirname ??? and other way

solution 1: dirname /dir/dir/dir/dir/filename
file name will be strripped off at the end

Solution 2:

var=/dir/dir/dir/dir/test
echo ${var%test}

is it necessary to use awk or sed only ?

hi

Hi

I donno if I made myself clear here...

when I am using the following statement in a shell script, Though the file exists, this command is failing.. thats because I guess $NF is being considered as a variable..

final_file=`find . -name \*$file_name.* | xargs ls -lt | nawk '/$month $dd/ { print $NF }' | cut -f2 -d "/"`

in a folder I have same filenames with different dates... so I need to pull up a file with a combination of filename and date..

that was my issue... can i get a suggestion as how to go abt ??

Thanks,
Ronnie

just want to split filename?
if you have Python:
Code:
>>> import os
>>> a = "/home/dba/appdba01/clone.log"
>>> os.path.split(a)
('/home/dba/appdba01', 'clone.log')
>>> os.path.split(a)[-1]
'clone.log'
>>>
