Data Help with tar extraction

Now it's the extraction!

I create an archive with the files and their hard and soft links.

Later, I delete the original files and directories in which I have all the desired files and their links. Then if i say
tar -xvf <tarfilename> I restore only those links that are present in the current directory. All other subdirectories and files and their links within are not being extracted.

I dont want to have empty directories for extraction in place, because this is something real that happens in case of a system outage. How can I handle this?

Can anyone please help by tellig me where I'm lost?!

TIA,
Sirisha
