Thanks, futurelet, that worked perfectly! However, I would like to avoid using ruby if possible, since that would mean I'd have to install it on the server. Installing anything new on a server around here takes an act of congress. Sed is already there, so that's my tool of choice if it will work.

If anyone can help with the sed issue posted above, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Tony

Code:
awk 'substr($0,p,3)=="ISS" {
  print substr($0,1,p-1) "   " substr($0,p+3)}' p=87 oldfile >new

Futurelet, I tried the awk command and recieved this:

awk: syntax error at source line
context is
>>> ' <<<
awk: bailing out at source line 1

The awk I'm using is from here:
http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/awkbook/index.html

If awk worked that would be great, since its just one executable to place on the server. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help.

Aargh, I'm still struggling with this. Anyone know why I'm getting the errors for the SED and/or AWK examples given above?
