RS="[: +]" = mawk / GNU awk only...

Standard awk only allows for a single character for RS

It worked with sample if you miss RS="[: +]" yes it prints entire line.

For awk solutions: on Solaris use /usr/xpg4/bin/awk rather than awk
sed works fine !!, but i how can i check if sed yields a result or not ?

its says sed command success if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then
in every case.

No matter which awk i use all the suggestions of awk yield entire file as output not just that particular value.

You can test if the result is non-empty.. or you can modify an awk solution to generate a return code

pilnet101 's solution should work..

If it is the last bit on the line then it could fail. You could use /useparnewgc=[0-9]*/ instead..
