For all these patterns it would need to be tested if a file exists, for example when only moving the files:
for file in abc* ghi* xyz*
  if [ -f "$file" ]; then
    case $file in 
      abc*) dest=/path/to/dir1 ;;
      ghi*) dest=/path/to/dir2 ;;
      xyz*) dest=/path/to/dir3 ;;
    mv -- "$file" "$dest"

Otherwise there will be an error message in case no file with a certain pattern exist..

ksh(!93) for loop with wildcard and empty directory

I'm sure this is by design, but using something like for f in dir/* do echo $f done produces unexpected (to me) results if run against an empty directory.
