On what basis are you renaming XFRRT_20130606203918_2496622_02.IDR as XFRRT_0001.IDR??

And is there any hint on the old file name to choose the seq# in the new file name?

Is there any chance that files in the target directory will already exist in the new naming format? (I.e., do we have to worry about a new name conflicting with an already existing filename?)

(And, why in the world would you want to use awk for this rather than doing it in the shell?)

i have used this script

Code:
#!/bin/bash -xv
for f in `ls -lrth XFR*|awk '{print $NF}'`
do
file=`echo $f|awk -F"_" '{print $1}'` # store filename without _[0-9] numbers
a=`echo $f|awk -F"_" '{print $NF}'` #store variable which I want to increment by 1
b=`echo $a|awk -F"." '{print $NF}'`
n=$(( b + 1 ))
mv $f XFRRT__"$n".IDR # renaming file with new _numbers[0-9]
done

but the problem is that it is renaming
Code:
XFRRT_20130606203918_2496622_02

to
Code:
XFRRT_3.IDR

but i want
Code:
XFRRT_03.IDR

can any one please help.

Code:
#!/bin/bash

file=XFRRT_20130606203918_2496622_02.IDR
echo "original file name: $file"
ext=${file##*.}
echo $ext
file1=${file%.*}
prefix=$(echo $file1 | cut -d"_" -f1)
echo $prefix
num=$(expr $(echo $file1 | awk -F"_" '{print $NF}') + 1)
echo $num
echo "mv $file "$prefix"_$(printf "%0.2d" $num).$ext"

Output:
Code:
original file name: XFRRT_20130606203918_2496622_02.IDR
IDR
XFRRT
3
mv XFRRT_20130606203918_2496622_02.IDR XFRRT_03.IDR

Your first post said you were trying to rename XFRRT_20130606203918_2496622_02.IDR to XFRRT_0001.IDR. In you most recent post you said you want to rename XFRRT_20130606203918_2496622_02 to XFRRT_03.IDR. So, do the files you want to rename end with ".IDR" or not? And in your first post you wanted 4 digit zero filled numbers; now you seem to want 2 digit zero filled numbers. Again, what is it (2, 4, or the same number of digits as appear after the last "_" in the source filename)? And the mv statement in your script includes "__" instead of "_", but your examples show one underscore. Again, what do you want?

And, I repeat: Do we have to worry about a new name conflicting with an already existing filename?
