Grep -f ??
Hi,

i was wondering about this result. Could you please help me out.

Code:
the datafile has cobol predefined keywords. but the search word "K-MOVE-TEXT."  was not present in the datafile. but still why its showing in the command line?? And if i give "ME." as search word , it's showing null which is right as it is also not present in the file. what the grep -f will do ?

$ echo "K-MOVE-TEXT." | grep -f  datafile
K-MOVE-TEXT.

$ echo "ME." | grep -f  datafile

Please get me out of this.. this is where i struck in my shell scripting..

any help is appreciated..

Patterns to be searched will be in the datafile each pattern on new line.
-f will scan the input for the patterns mentioned in datafile.
Is this what you wanted to know?

Hmmm, yes, i got it now.

But i have another doubt, could any one tel me how to find out whether the lines is starting with a particular word or not.

like in the following lines i need to FIN OUT all the lines starting with "printf" . i can't use grep "^printf" as this printf line may contain space before like below.

Code:
$cat ipfile
          printf " this is printf trailing spaces"
printf " this is test"
print " this is print"
display" this is display"

Using awk:
