It not work in ksh93.
echo ${!NAME}
return string NAME

Well, I've tried with ksh(88?) and ksh93 on AIX 6.1 with no joy. I've installed bash and got it to work first time. Same results on RHEL6.3.

I apologize, I was certain that was a ksh93 feature, though not a ksh88 one, though that appears to be mistaken.

Since you have ksh93 though, perhaps you could use associative arrays instead of dynamic variable names, which would allow you to avoid using the dangerous eval statement.

Code:
typeset -A data

data["NAME"]="asdf"

echo "${data[NAME]}"
