Sorry, I should have been more clear.

I compiled the java file using javac helloworld.java, which did produce a helloworld.class file

I then ran it with the command java helloworld.java

Am I not supposed to have the .java extension when trying to run it with the java command?

Not according to the javac and java man pages on my system. According to the man page you should run the compiled java bytecode by issuing the command:

java helloworld

and doing that produces the output:
Code:
Hello World

when I run it on my MacBook Pro running OS X.
