So, if your input file was:-
Code:
012312112
1372422843 1236712
1372422843 1275127
2110982933 9876542
3109301010

.... would you want the output:-
Code:
1 1236712
1 1275127
2 9876542

Please note that awk does not modify your input file. You have to redirect the output to a new file.

Try this code:
Code:
awk 's{match(s,/[ \t]+[0-9]+/); print substr(s,1,1), substr(s,RSTART)}NR-1{s=$0}' file

If it serves your purpose, then redirect the output to a new file and rename it back to original:
Code:
awk 's{match(s,/[ \t]+[0-9]+/); print substr(s,1,1), substr(s,RSTART)}NR-1{s=$0}' file > tmp
mv tmp file

I hope this helps.

try also:
Code:
awk 'NF>1 {$1=substr($0,1,1); print}' OFS="\t" infile

Code:
sed '1d;$d;s/^\(.\)[0-9]*/\1/' file

Add -i option to write it back to the file.
