This is the type of problem that some of us can't resist. It's not too complicated, so it makes for a nice distraction without consuming a great deal of time. It's not too simple, so there are many different ways to approach it.

Here's my contribution:
Code:
$ echo 101 | sed 'h; s/./+-----+ /g; x; s/./|  &  | /g; G; H; g'
+-----+ +-----+ +-----+
|  1  | |  0  | |  1  |
+-----+ +-----+ +-----+

Another tact,

I'm sure there must be a nice 1 liner bash method to get the spaced string without the call sed, but it eludes me

Code:
binary=10011
spaced=$(echo $binary | sed 's/./& /g')

printf "+-----+%.0s    " $spaced
printf "\n"
printf "|  %c  |    " $spaced
printf "\n"
printf "+-----+%.0s    " $spaced
printf "\n"
