grep between

Hello,
Could you please help me with that:
I have file with rows like:
Code:
AAAAA_ABCDE_20120918_120043_ABC_00.XXX
BBBB_KLMNR_20120919_140043_AB_00.XXX
CCC_ABCD_20120920_160043_ABCD_00.XXX
DD_ABC_20120921_180043_AFH_00.XXX

And I want to grep all between 20120919 and 20120920 and two have output like:
Code:
BBBB_KLMNR_20120919_140043_AB_00.XXX
CCC_ABCD_20120920_160043_ABCD_00.XXX

Thanks!

if there is only one entry of the dates..

try this..

Code:
sed -n '/20120919/,/20120920/p' file

Code:
awk -F_ '$3>=20120919 && $3<=20120920' file

Thanks a lot!
Apparently additional strings appeared in the file like:
Code:
AAAA_
BBBB_

then
Code:
sed -n '/20120919/,/20120920/p' file

will get them also, but I don't need...
And strings like:
Code:
AAAAA_ABCDE.20120918_120043_ABC_00.XXX
BBBB_KLMNR.20120919_140043_AB_00.XXX

then I can not use
Code:
awk -F_ '$3>=20120919 && $3<=20120920' file

Let's assume that there can be strings without date, which I don't need and the length and the content before the date is uknown. Any ideas if there is a way to handle this?

Thanks!

try some thing like this..

Code:
sed -n '/20120919/,/20120920/p' file | sed -n '/201[0-9]*/p'

You can modify above highlighted one as per your criteria.Smilie

awk is also working fine,
Code:
awk -F"_" '{if($3>=20120919 && $3<=20120920) print $0}' filename
