I think there have been patches out for sed... ( and my box has not been either...)

To add to what vbe and other's have said regarding UNIX vs Linux, most Linux systems use GNU utilities which typically implement many extensions (some are very useful, while some are nothing but an impediment to portability). Your simple suggestion uses two extensions which have little value; most seds will not handle it as you intend.
