How to remove a line if column 1 does not contain any value?

Correct, and appreciated. Pls help me out - how does this work? x is an uninitialized variable, so, empty, and thus would force $2 to be interpreted as a string when concatenated?

Correct. An initialized variable is empty, so it contains the value "" when called. Since it is a string concatenation, it is a string context. It is equivalent to awk '"" $2'
