windows paths digesting

how can I process Windows paths to only get the file names out of the paths? I was trying to use basename but that didn't recognize C:\ as a valid path so it ignores those '\' delimiters.

Please post:
What Operating System and version you are using and what Shell you normally use.

Please post:
Sample input and expected sample output making it emphatically clear with examples where the Windows filename comes from. Because the backslash character has special meaning to unix Shells, it will be so important to not let the Shell see the backslashes.
