You can leave out the & , or do you specifically need a background process?

The assignment to var1 will wait for "date &" to finish, so you can leave the ampersand out.

itkamaraj:
In your script change var1=$(date &) to var1=$(date) &.

Scrutinizer: I need to use fork, cant leave &

You can use a file to store and read from, or a named pipe

or a two-way pipe as is available in ksh93:
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
date |&
printf "%s" "hello world: "
read -p var1
echo "$var1"
