How to pass value to next command
I want to send value obtained from one command(left of |) to another command that is on right of the first one (right of |) for the following two commands:

raw=`ls <directory> | grep <files_name part>`
raw=${raw:0:4}

I don't know what you exactly want to do, but maybe xargs is what you are looking for?

Sorry, If I was not clear. I want to do exactly what those 2 lines are doing in one line. Is it possible?
