Hi Guys,
I am creating a script with multiple options for user:
scriptname -D<string> , I am using the case statement to store that string as variable like below:

@ i = 0
while ($i <= ${#argv})
   switch ($argv[$i])
    case -D*:
        set var = `echo $argv[$i] | awk '{print substr ($1,3)}'`
    endsw
@ i++
end

All I want is that the usage should be scriptname -D <string>, that space betwen -D <string>. How can I modify awk '(print substr ($1,3)) so that it captures any string after -D with a space rather than with no space.

You don't need to use awk at all. The argument will be its own element in argv, not part of any string, and separated for you already.

Use the next element of argv, not the current one, then increment i an extra time so that argument doesn't get fed into the switch statement.

@dixits: Try getopts. You wouldn't have to bother about spaces after the switch and invoke giants (awk/perl) to work.
