Question Need a little explanation of "\..\{3\}$"

Hey,

I have used the following to remove the extension/prefix from a file name:
Code:
file_name=$1
file_title=`echo $1|sed 's/\..\{3\}$//'`

It works perfectly but I am looking for an explanation to what "\..\{3\}$" actually does. If someone could break it down and explain what each piece does I will be very grateful Smilie

\..\{3\}$ =>
\. --> Explicitly mentioning shell to match dot
. --> matches any single character except newline
\{3\} --> match 3 numbers of previously mentioned character. So, .\{3\} will match exactly 3 characters
$ --> match pattern found at end of string.

So, to summarize this: match exactly any 3 characters after a dot.
