Question script problem

i am new to unix scripting


here is my code

print "This script creates test messages"
print "Please enter test case name"
read testcasename
echo $testcasename
print "Please enter in field 1 Version"
read version | wc -c $version
if [[ "$version" -lt 3 ]]; then
   print -n $version >> $testcasename

print "Pleasent in field 2 Date"
read date | wc -c $date
if [[ "$date" -lt 8 ]]; then
   print -n $date >> $testcasename

Code:
$ ./andrew_testter.ksh

3 main problems now
1)It now does not write to the file
2)the if and else statement do not work
3)when I enter data I am now getting a 0?

please any guidance would be appreciated

read version | wc -c $version

"read" doesn't output data to standard output, it sets a variable. You can't feed anything which doesn't print into a pipe, there's nothing to feed.

You don't need "wc" to count the number of characters anyway. ${#varname} gives you the length of the string in 'varname'.
