i have file like this format:
23312100.2011091617522800CF5253.DAT

so i want get date (yyyymmdd) for rename again this file like this
20110916.DAT


how can i do that any idea about using awk with regex

Is the position of the date and the extension name fixed?

Code:
$ echo 23312100.2011091617522800CF5253.DAT | awk '{print substr($0,10,8)".DAT"}'
20110916.DAT
