I tried with this

Code:
 if [ $string != $newstring ]; then
((i=i+1))
 echo "$i $newstring" >> $BPATH
awk -F : '($10 == 1)' $BPATH
fi
done < $DPATH

but it doesn't work at all..Smilie

== is for comparison and not for assignment!

Code:
#!/bin/bash

OLD="H"
NEW="M"

DPATH="/home/me/file.dat"
BPATH="/home/me/out.dat"

i=0
while read lineno string data
do
  ((i=i+1))
  echo "$i $string $data" >> $BPATH
  newstring=$( echo $string | tr $OLD $NEW )
  if [ $string != $newstring ]; then
    ((i=i+1))
    new_data=$( echo $data | awk '{$10=1}1' )
    echo "$i $newstring $new_data" >> $BPATH
  fi
done < $DPATH

I think it is due to the use of the "while" command, isn't it?

Is there anybody who knows the commands to use to keep the original file format after running the script? It changes the position of the blank spaces... I made a research but didn't find anything useful.
Thanks a lot
