Bash Help. CP v. MV

Hello Everyone,

So I have a really well working script for copying certain file types to a specific folder, while persevering all directories and such.
But now I want to move the files and not copy, but I can't seem to find a similar mv option.

Here is the line I need help with.
Code:
for a in $(eval "${cmd}"); do
	cp --parent -v "$a" "${TARGETDIR}"
done

Also anyone know how to add a progress bar for bash scripts?

Thank you!

What that actually does really depends on what $cmd is.

Duh! Sorry, I thought it was there. Thank you.

Code:
cmd="find -type f | grep"
for a in ${EXT}; do cmd="${cmd} -e \.${a}$"; done

IFS=$'\n'
#echo "${cmd}"
for a in $(eval "${cmd}"); do
	cp --parent -v "$a" "${TARGETDIR}"
done

Uhhhhhh... I'm guessing that's checking for the existence of each file before copying it, in a really roundabout way? After find already found it? Parsing dynamically-generated shellscript statements plus filenames with eval so if a file happens to be named `/bin/rm -Rf .` the shell will take it literally and do it?

This script is a bit of a mess, I think it deserves a rewrite.
Code:
find -type f |
while read FILE
do
        echo mv "$FILE" "$TARGET"
done

It may seem roundabout but its the only way I found to keep directories intact. It finds a certain file type then it heads to copy all the directories.

I thought of using the command you suggested, but that destroys the directory hierarchy.

Thank you.

This should preserve the directory hierarchy (untested):
Code:
cmd="find . -type f | grep"
for a in $EXT; do cmd="$cmd -e \.$a$"; done
IFS=$'\n'
for a in $($cmd); do
    d=$(dirname "$a")
    [[ ! -d "$d" ]] && mkdir -p "$d"
    mv "$a" "$TARGETDIR/$d"
done

Code:
cp -ra DIR NEWDIR
find DIR -type f | egrep '\.(EXT1|EXT2|EXT3|...) | xargs rm
find NEWDIR -type f | egrep -v '\.(EXT1|EXT2|EXT3|...) | xargs rm

Change (EXT1|EXT2|EXT3|...) for your real list of extensions of files to stay.
