Why this work on terminal and not in .sh ???

Hi, all
I'm using that line to set dynamic window name for PuTTy session, so it displays pwd.
It's hard for me translate what this string does, especially <-ne>, could not find this anywhere in docs.
But anyway, I'm fine doing this from prompt, but I can't make this line work from the shell, tried all variation with single/double/no quotes, nothing helps. Can anybody tell me why is like this ? I'd like to put this into shell for easy setup.

bash-3. $ PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne "\033]0;${USER}@${HOSTNAME}: ${PWD}\007"'

It's two squished together, -n and -e. -n means 'do not put a newline on the end', -e means 'enable fancy escape sequences'. See man echo on your system.

What, exactly, were you doing?

Remember that setting the variable in a script does nothing. When you run ./programname it sets it in the script and nowhere else. You have to source it like . scriptname to have it run in the same shell so your shell actually gets it.

I have a separate script that has this line + export PROMPT_COMMAND. But I didn't get pass first line yet. I expect to run this .sh in given session and get it work for this session.
I can't do this in .bashrc, .profile as I work under somebody else account. So I have a isolated prompt.sh.
