search replace with loop and variable

Hi, could anyone help me with this, tried several times but still not getting it right or having enough grounding to do it outside of javascript: Using awk or sed or bash: need to go through a text file using a for next loop, replacing substrings in the file that consist of a potentially multi digit number preceeded by a single left or right bracket, replacing that string with the found type of bracket followed by the for next's variable, itself incremented for each new found instance, instead of the found number. sorry it's so specific but i am trying, thanks if you can help.

Give an example of input and an example of desired output.

Code:
sed 's/[0-9]{1,}(/(/g' inputfilename

One way! Will search for a string of numbers followed by a '(' and then will replace it with '('.

thanks but it has to include the for loop variable.

example of file as is :

the rain in spain falls mainly (098 grass is green )999 the sun is out

what it needs to change to with the for loop's variables inserted:

the rain in spain falls mainly (1 grass is green )2 the sun is out

I can't get how to amalgamate the loop and the exact awk or sed in one goSmilie

thanks. Also, the quotes, are not 'around' anything. they are just two different arbitrary characters as markers
