What does this script do?

Hi,

Can somebody here please explain to me what each line in the below sript does?
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl

    local ($buffer, @pairs, $pair, $name, $value, %FORM);
    # Read in text
    $ENV{'REQUEST_METHOD'} =~ tr/a-z/A-Z/;
    if ($ENV{'REQUEST_METHOD'} eq "POST")
    {
        read(STDIN, $buffer, $ENV{'CONTENT_LENGTH'});
    }else {
        $buffer = $ENV{'QUERY_STRING'};
    }
    # Split information into name/value pairs
    @pairs = split(/&/, $buffer);
    foreach $pair (@pairs)
    {
        ($name, $value) = split(/=/, $pair);
        $value =~ tr/+/ /;
        $value =~ s/%(..)/pack("C", hex($1))/eg;
        $FORM{$name} = $value;
    }

Thanks in advnce!!

It parses HTTP GET and POST queries.

If I google "what does this do", the browser sends a GET request to Google with this URL:
Code:
http://www.google.com/search?q=what+does+this+do&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

The script
  • gets the request, after the ?, differently depending on whether GET or POST,
  • splits it into substrings separated by ampersands,
  • splits each substring (each $pair) into $name and $value separated by an equal sign,
  • replaces each plus sign in the values with a space, and
  • packs each name/value pair in @FORM, ready for processing.
Code:
("q","what does this do"),("ie","utf-8"),("oe","utf-8"),("rls","org.mozilla:en-US:official"),("client","firefox-a")
