the command above will generate 3 files: file1-3.txt.

Hi! But consider the program "prog1.c" which I've attached..
If I execute the query, I need to get 4 files, ie file1.txt-file4.txt, but I'm getting 7 files file1.txt-file7.txt.
Please check out the zip file which I've attached..
Why is that so?

based on the content in your prog1.c:
Code:
sed -r 's/^(void|int) .*\(\)$/-----&/g' t.txt |awk 'BEGIN{FS="-----";RS=""} {for (i=1;i<=NF;i++){print $i > "file"i".txt"}} '

will generate four files. file1-4.txt.
