With a little adaption of the code of mirni:

while [ $i -lt 25 ]
do
  nr=$(printf "%02d" $i)
  fname=data_file.$DATE_YYMMDD${nr}.Z
  if [ ! -f "$fname" ] && echo Missing $fname
  i=$(( $i + 1 ))
done

Yeah, you can break it up. I edited the code in post above. Or use other suggestions provided. Smilie
