What error are you getting is it something like:
If so you don't have write permission to the file your trying to delete, ie the ownership / permissions on the remote file do not allow you to delete
For deleteing all files in a remote directory, if you don't want to be prompted with a Y/N question for each and every file. You should use -i command-line option of ftp which turns off interactive prompting , this feature can also be toggled on/off by using the "prompt" command.
Use the "mdelete *" command to delete all the files in the remote directory, as log as you have permissions it should remove all the files.
