All the shells which have [[ ... ]] are POSIX shells with extensions (i.e., modern shells) and therefore, as you say, have no need for [[ ... ]] (with the possible exception of testing regexes, which I have never had a need for).

In what situations does the read command not work correctly?
Just 'read' by itself and no parameters throws an error message. It's the very first shell I've encountered that does that.

If I recall correctly, the Bourne shell (/bin/sh on Solaris) behaves the same way.

This read behaviour appears to be POSIX compliant though:

read [-r] var...
read synopsis

On Solaris, /bin/sh is not a standard Unix shell; use /usr/xpg4/bin/sh (I think that's right).

The POSIX standard requires a variable name as an argument to read.

huh, as far as I know it is the standard Bourne shell which is probably the most common Unix shell ever used. It is not a POSIX compliant shell since it predates the POSIX standard.

Quite right. It is a Bourne shell; or rather, it is one of several implementations of a Bourne shell.

There is greater compatibility between implementations of the POSIX shell (because there is a standard), than between different Bourne shells.

Every *nix system for at least the last 10 years has had a POSIX shell.
