Here is the snippet of my script.

shr=`printf '%02d\n' `expr $shr + 2``

I am getting the following error...

3: execute permission denied
# 10

You need to escape the inner backquotes:

shr=`printf '%02d\n' \`expr $shr + 2\``

# 11

Try this,

 shr=$(printf '%02d\n' $(($shr + 2)))

# 12

assuming the OP switched to a POSIX shell (/usr/xpg4/bin/sh, ksh, ksh93, bash, ...)

This really puzzles me. The following code gives me the error 'expr: syntax error' when I try to do multi-line comment using here document <<EOF echo "Sum is: `expr $1 + $2`" EOF Even if I explicitly comment out the line containing the expr using "#", the error message would still exist... convert a=(b/100)*a into a "expr" expression

Hi Guys, THis is the first time am using the expr expression. I like to know how to write the expression a=(b\100)*a.
