what is the right way to use newgrp in script

my requirement is
$ id user

o/p for the above command

$ uid=1(user) gid=2(x)

a user is involved in 3 groups x,y,z
whenever the user try to execute a script, script should ask for the group as input from user ,assume the group he wants to change as Y and the rest of the scripts command should go fine,once it done.

if i check my shell prompt,

$id
$
i dont get any o/p, and id command does noot work, but when i exit from the shell the id command works and the group is not getting changed.

what is the right way to execute newgrp cmd inside shell or perl script?

It does help to know what OS (and version...)... And what is your issue..

On id not giving output. id could be an alias or something. Try some of these commands:

Code:
type id
\id
/usr/bin/id

newgrp varies quite a bit between the various OS flavours and versions, so we need you environment before going on. Also it would be worth describing why you think you need to use newgrp as other options may work better.
